I was hunched over the hood at 9:18 a.m., rain still clinging to the edges of the windshield, trying to line up the protection film while my friend Dylan cursed at a crooked edge. The shop’s heater coughed in the corner, and outside on Cambie Street a bus whooshed past with that wet, metal sound that only happens in Vancouver when the city is still waking up. We had three hours before the technician was due back from his lunch, and zero patience for mistakes. I promised

I was hunched over the driver seat at 8:12 a.m., rain trickling down the windshield while the heater clicked like an old radio, watching the installer peel back the last corner of clear film on my friend's front bumper. The shop smelled like soap and rubber and something chemical that made me cough once. Outside, a delivery truck squealed down Hastings and a cyclist shouted something I couldn't make out. I had promised to help make the call on what to do first: PPF or ceram

I’m crouched by the passenger door at 10:15 a.m., rain still spitting thin over Main Street, and I can see my breath inside the shop window. The tech is peeling back a corner of clear film from the bumper and I’m trying not to fidget while my friend watches like it’s a magic trick. Seattle-style drizzle, but with Vancouver’s grey that somehow looks cleaner. The film lifts, the paint underneath is flawless, and my friend says, out loud and honest, “That actually looks new.”

I was hunched over the hood, rain soaking through my jacket, watching the tech wipe a tiny bead of water off my friend's Prius with slow, almost reverent motions. It was 4:17 p.m., the kind of gray that makes Vancouver feel like it’s breathing through a wet blanket, and I could hear the 4th Street traffic like distant applause. I had promised to GleamWorks help him pick a shop for ceramic coating and ppf, and suddenly I was in the middle of the decision, shovel in GleamW

I was halfway through rinsing coffee from my sleeve when the tech leaned in and said, "We guarantee coverage for ten years, but you have to bring it in every two years for an inspection." Rain was splattering the windshield like static, the kind Vancouver rain that doesn't really pour but insists on being noticed. I had driven across town from Kitsilano at 3:15 p.m., stuck behind a bus that never seemed to decide when to stop. My friend was waiting in the passenger seat, sc

I was hunched over the hood at 8:10 a.m., rain still misting off my windshield wipers, trying to explain to my friend why he should care about warranty fine print while traffic crawled along Hastings like it always does. His white Camry looked like a proper candidate for a refresh, but I could tell he didn't want to spend a ridiculous amount without knowing what he was actually getting. We had driven from Kitsilano at 7:00, coffee gone cold in the cup holder, and we were bo

I was hunched over my steering wheel, rain streaking the windshield like someone had taken a sponge to the city, staring at a portfolio propped up on a shop counter. The fluorescent lights buzzed, the heater in my old Civic coughed once and died, and my fingers were still damp from unlocking my phone to compare photos. It was 2:13 p.m., Tuesday, and I had already been through three shops that day, from Kitsilano to near the SkyTrain in Richmond. I felt like a very tired art
